Do You Love Yourself?

Valentines day is almost upon us: is a day set aside to show love to a special person in our life. But take a moment to remind yourself its not all chocolates and roses and that you can, and should, show love towards yourself which will  make your heart sing.

I came across this saying by Osho

“Love is our deepest longing. Just as the body needs food the soul needs love – it is nourishment, spiritual nourishment”

So often we look for love from outside ourselves – as a child from our Mum and Dad, and from our siblings; as we grow from our friends and later in life from a partner and our own children.  But as a counsellor I know that these relationships can flounder and when relationships don’t fulfil us as we need, we suffer. Sometimes we wonder how someone can treat us as they do and feel they don’t love us. Or perhaps we feel we should love someone but we just can’t and then guilt starts to manifest itself.

For me, the most important love is the love we show ourselves. If we can truly love ourselves then we start to satisfy our soul’s longing for love and become happier and more fulfilled people. Yes, we still need others in our lives but the self love we nurture will attract more love into our lives from others.
